As a leading interdisciplinary community of people dedicated to fostering through research and education, the creation, application, and dissemination of knowledge on nonprofit organizations, philanthropy, civil society and voluntary action, ARNOVA is one of a kind.
With a membership roster that boasts more than 1100 members from over 35 countries and dozens of disciplines, ARNOVA is an important bridge between theoretical and applied interests, helping scholars gain insight into the day-to-day concerns of third-sector organizations, while providing nonprofit professionals with connections to research they can use to improve the work of their organizations and the quality of life for citizens and communities.
Devoted to promoting innovative ideas, creativity and pluralism, we serve the wider voluntary and nonprofit sectors and the communities they serve by promoting excellence in scholarship and teaching, disseminating the latest research, and creating forums for dialogue that engage practice leaders and researchers and teachers from across the globe. The General Fund is the main pool of resources that fuels everything from ARNOVA's programs, events, scholarships and grants to the day-to-day maintenance of membership software and database records.

Diversity Scholarship Fund
The Diversity Scholars and Leaders Professional Development Program reflects ARNOVA's commitment to diversity by focusing on helping emerging scholars from underrepresented groups prepare to enter the field of nonprofit, philanthropic, and voluntary action studies.
Goal
The program focuses on preparing participants who are beginning master or doctoral level education and research, and it is dedicated to encouraging professional development through networking and sharing strategies for teaching, tackling dissertations and research, navigating careers, and promoting work-life balance.
Eligibility
To qualify for the Diversity Scholars and Leaders Program, applicants must be enrolled in or considering enrollment in an accredited graduate program with a focus on philanthropic, nonprofit, or voluntary action studies (preference is given to those already pursuing doctoral studies in these areas). The selection committee actively seeks applications from persons of traditionally underrepresented groups.
Your gift to the Diversity Scholarship Fund will help provide professional development opportunities for scholars of diverse backgrounds who also receive a conference scholarship including registration and accommodations.

Rudney Dissertation Award
Gabriel G. Rudney Memorial Award for an Outstanding Dissertation in Nonprofit and Voluntary Action Research
This award, endowed in memory of pioneer researcher Gabriel Rudney, is given annually for a Ph.D. dissertation completed and/or defended in the three calendar years preceding the award. Dissertations that contribute to the advancement of theory, conceptualization, research, or practice in an area closely related to nonprofit organizations or voluntary action are eligible.
Nominations are especially invited in the issue areas where Gabe Rudney made significant research contributions during his lifetime: patterns of giving in the United States; tax policy and charitable giving; tax policy and the nonprofit sector; the economic contribution of the nonprofit sector; and, comparative international studies.
The author's advisor normally submits nominations that explain the nature of the work and how well it meets criteria for excellence in its field. A $1000 cash prize is awarded to the winner at the annual ARNOVA conference.
Contributions to this fund help perpetuate the legacy of Gabriel Rudney by honoring scholars who have completed and/or defended dissertations of the highest quality in these areas that he valued.

Diverse Scholars Initiative
Our diversity programs, developed and led by black and brown scholars, work on eliminating barriers to entry by funding and guiding academics or future scholars who have little to no experience in the field, which makes the years’ long process far less intimidating. Your support can dramatically improve the chances that black and brown scholars will successfully navigate the educational challenges and experiences required to flourish in careers in research.
In the U.S., black and brown faces are underrepresented at all levels, particularly in academia. If research is to help us understand human behavior, and what works and what doesn’t in the nonprofit sector, then black and brown scholars need to be part of the research team. Our diversity programs, developed and led by black and brown scholars, work on eliminating barriers to entry by funding and guiding academics or future scholars who have little to no experience in the field, which makes the years’ long process far less intimidating. Your support can dramatically improve the chances that black and brown scholars will successfully navigate the educational challenges and experiences required to flourish in careers in research.

Early Scholars Initiative
Building a scholarly career takes a unique set of skills. Fellowships, mentoring, and conference sponsorships allow individual scholars to learn from a community of their peers; these programs provide a voice for next generation nonprofit researchers, connection to those who have walked the career path before them, and community for emerging scholars from a variety of disciplines, institutions, and perspectives. Your support can help these junior scholars and practitioners be better equipped to make significant contributions throughout their careers.

Operating outside the pressures of any individual institution of higher education, think-tank, or other organization, associations like ARNOVA are well placed to initiate discussions about change that can transform the human experience, but only if they are able to extend beyond their own discipline-related silos. Your support allows ARNOVA to invite scholars from other associations (e.g., history, communications, social work, sociology, environmental studies, black studies, women’s studies, etc.) to engage with ARNOVAns to strengthen the research about and help shape better practice in nonprofit and philanthropic organizations.

Peter Dobkin Hall was an active and long-time ARNOVA member, winner of the organization’s 2008 Award for Distinguished Achievement in Nonprofit and Voluntary Action Research, and one of the most influential historians of the nonprofit sector of the last half-century. This prize will honor Hall’s memory by celebrating the published book that has made the most significant scholarly contribution to our understanding of the history of philanthropy. For purposes of the prize, “philanthropy” will be defined in broad ARNOVA terms to include the history of nonprofit organizations, civil society, and philanthropy.
