PHD Professional Development Workshop

ARNOVA and AROCSA, in partnership with the Ford Foundation, have established the Emerging African Scholars (EAS) Program in Africa. The 2019 program focuses on a PhD Seminar and PhD Workshop.


 PhD Workshop


The PhD Workshop is a two (2) and a half hour (2:15pm - 4:45pm) professional development and intellectually engaging workshop to be held on Monday, July 22, 2019 as a pre-session of the AROCSA Annual Conference in Nairobi, Kenya. The workshop seeks to address general needs and challenges faced by African PhD students including:

      I.   How to manage your supervisor 

      II.  Funding

      III. How to publish in a peer reviewed journal




To provide professional advice and career guidance to doctoral students in different fields including nonprofit, and philanthropic studies, in dealing with challenges they face as African PhD students.





Open to doctoral students from Africa working in any field including nonprofit and philanthropic studies. Students at the various under-listed stages in their doctoral program are encouraged to apply:

·      Have defended a dissertation proposal

·      Have not yet defended a dissertation proposal

·      Have dissertation plans not yet fully formed





Applicants  are  required  to  apply  for the PhD Workshop through  the  electronic  application  on  the  ARNOVA website.  To attend the workshop, selected applications must:


1. Become an AROCSA member (sign up with $15)

2. Register for the PhD Workshop  / AROCSA Conference ($10)

*Once selected, we will reach out to you to help you register for membership and the workshop



*With only $25, students gain AROCSA membership, opportunity to participate in the PHD Workshop, and attend the full AROCSA Conference


 Selection Criteria


Spots in the workshop are limited. Selection of candidates will be based on readiness to complete the requirements mentioned above.


 Award Amount


When candidates purchase AROCSA membership and register for the workshop, they gain:

 - complimentary ARNOVA membership waiving a fee of $77;

 - complimentary AROCSA conference registration granting full conference attendance from 5:00 pm July 22 - 24, 2019
