A Review of Africa’s Digital Renaissance and Innovations in Civil Society

ARNOVA and AROCSA, in partnership with the Ford Foundation, have established the Emerging African Scholars (EAS) Program in Africa. The 2019 program focuses on a PhD Seminar for professional development and sharpening of student’s research skills.


 PhD Seminar


The PhD Seminar is a full day professional development and intellectually engaging workshop to be held on Monday, July 22, 2019 as a pre-session of the AROCSA Annual Conference in Nairobi, Kenya. The seminar seeks to provide guidance for emerging scholars on the path to a successful career, help sharpen their research skills and address the challenges that African PhD students face. 





To provide scholarly research and professional advice and mentoring for doctoral students in the field of nonprofit, philanthropic, civil society and voluntary action studies.





Open to doctoral students from Africa whose research focus is on nonprofit, philanthropic, civil society, and voluntary action studies in Africa. Students at the various under-listed stages in their doctoral program are encouraged to apply:

·      Have defended a dissertation proposal

·      Have not yet defended a dissertation proposal

·      Have dissertation plans not yet fully formed





Applicants  are  required  to  apply  for the PhD seminar through  the  electronic  application  on  the  ARNOVA website.  Applications must include the following:


1. 2-3-page (double space, 12pt font with one inch margins) description of dissertation research or proposed research outline

2. Brief statement on what the student expects to benefit from participation in the PhD Seminar

3. Recommendation from student’s dissertation advisor / Faculty advisor

 Selection Criteria


Spots in the workshop are limited. Selection of candidates will be based on the:

1. Potential quality and impact of proposed research

2. Centrality of the work to philanthropy, nonprofit, civil society and voluntary action studies in Africa.

3. Potential for the student to gain from the workshop



 Award Amount


Complimentary conference registration; shared accommodation with another emerging scholar for three (3) nights (check in: Sunday, July 21; check out: Wednesday morning, July 24) at the conference hotel; and breakfast, lunch, and refreshments during a full day of scholarly exchange.

· Participate for the full duration of the PhD Seminar (expected 9:00 AM – 4:15 PM Monday, July 22, 2019)

· Participate in the full 2019 AROCSA Conference, held from July 22-24, 2019, to utilize additional opportunities and learn more about emerging issues in the field.

Deadline:                         EXTENDED TO May 13, 2019

Awardee Notification:               May 17, 2019
