The VALUES (VRAD) Section Dark Side Colloquium was held at the 2016 ARNOVA Conference. on Nov. 17. “Charity But NOT Charitable---Exorbitant Fundraising Costs-Expenses,” was organized/chaired by David Horton Smith (Boston College). The four presenters and their topics were:

(1) Jeff Aulgur, Ed.D., Arkansas Tech University, Russellville, AR: Questionable Executive Spending at the Wounded Warrior Project: Is the Board at Fault?

(2) Rachael Kennedy, Ph.D., Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA (and Betty Watts, Ph.D.): Revenue, Reputation, and Reverberations: The Intersection of Dark Side Actions and the Demise of an Overseas Charity

(3) Richard Steinberg, Ph.D., IUPUI, Indianapolis, IN: Fraud, Inefficiency, and Incompetence: What Counts as Evidence?

(4) Gary Grobman, Ph.D., Bay Path University, Longmeadow, MA: Normative Ethics in Fundraising: A Response to Economic Theories

Presenters focused on perceived "exorbitant" fund-raising costs, using high profile case examples.
