#ARNOVA20: What’s going on?

The ARNOVA Board of Trustees met last week to discuss the format of the 2020 conference in Indianapolis, given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and continued physical distancing and stay-at-home orders. Because of their desire to be as inclusive as possible, and in recognition of the ever-evolving state of global affairs, the Board has unanimously voted to add a virtual component for this year’s November conference. However, the final decision about whether there will also be an in-person component will be made early this summer. Whether we are meeting physically or virtually - we want to assure you that the 2020 ARNOVA Conference in November will go on.

What does this mean?

While members consistently share the importance and value of face-to-face interactions and networking at the November Annual Conference, we recognize that due to health, safety, and financial concerns, that may not be a possibility for many this year. A virtual component means that all presenters and attendees will now have the option to participate in the conference virtually. We’re still working out exactly what that will look like and will share details with the ARNOVA community as they unfold.

Will this affect deadlines?

The review of conference proposals has begun and will continue as planned. Submitters will be informed of decisions no later than June 22nd, and those accepted will have until July 20th to let us know their preference for presenting based on the format of the conference (virtual or in-person, if possible).

However, the deadline for award and scholarship applications has been extended to May 27th. Applicants will be informed of decisions on July 15th and will also be given the opportunity to confirm their preference for participating.

Message from the Executive Director

I want to thank all of the ARNOVA Board members for their thoughtful discussion and careful consideration of all relevant details. The health, safety, and diverse needs of our members, their families, friends, and colleagues are of primary concern to them, and their conversations have been driven primarily by these concerns.

I also want to thank the membership at large - whether responding to surveys, offering to share insights and resources, volunteering for our many committees, or simply chatting with me so that I can better understand and therefore maintain the value of the association with you, your commitment and helpfulness is much appreciated. We have all experienced more change in the last several months than any of us could have imagined at the start of the year; it looks like we’ll be managing a lot of change for a while longer. So, I leave you with this thought:

“It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new. But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful. There is more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life, and in change there is power.” Alan Cohen.

Stay safe, stay healthy, stay brave.

Best,

Lynnette Cook,

Executive Director
