#ARNOVACommunity: How are you feeling?

Dear ARNOVA members and friends,
 
You might remember seeing a brief survey from us recently. We wanted to understand how you’re feeling as you face a variety of stay-at-home, social distancing, and remote work challenges, BUT we also didn’t want to ask for too much in an already stressful time. So, in as few questions as possible, we asked about overall feelings, support from employers, and professional resources available; our thinking was that we might identify any common themes in terms of support or resources that were particularly helpful for some, in order to facilitate sharing them with others who reported a lack of support. Our response sample is understandable small, but with an overall n = 109, we think it’s still worth sharing the results.
 
For our very non-scientific study, we first asked members to rate their overall feelings on a 5-pt Likert-type scale (1 = calm, 5 = anxious).  Results suggest a fairly normal distribution, with a very slight lean toward anxious.  For me, this begs the question of what the distribution might have been if we had asked the same question 5 months ago.


 

When asked if your institution/organization has the resources to support you during this time, the overwhelming majority of you said yes (total responses = 94).


 

When asked a broader question about having access to professional resources to help during the pandemic, an even greater percentage reported having some or sufficient resources (total n = 86).


 

A smaller subset of the sample (n=36) was able to identify resources that they’d like to see.  Case studies, videos/webinars, and articles topped the list, followed by online texts, tech and software, and online forums.


 

Finally:  Among the responses to open-ended questions about additional resources that members would like to see, and/or other needs and concerns, respondents clear ideas, including some that we’re preparing to share with the Board next week. 

 

Highlights include:

 

  • Delaying the proposals deadline further (it was extended to April 27th; Board will be discussing May 5th)
  • Reducing the workload of volunteers (e.g., track chairs, NVSQ reviewers)
  • Increase online opportunities to connect with each other and stayed engaged with scholarship
    • Include some late evening hours for those with little kids at home
  • Reducing membership and conference fees
  • Helping to pool together open job postings for members once we start to come out of pandemic-mode
  • Tips on conducting research in this environment, including best practices for moving projects forward
  • Anything focused on research and scholarship, publication, networking and tenure and promotion
  • Case studies related to how others are adapting to the situation
  • Information on the “new normal”
