Greetings fellow ARNOVANs,

In San Diego, we will be holding five Emerging Scholars Professional Development Workshops. We anticipate them being very engaging and informative and all are invited to attend. All five workshops will be held in Marina 6.

The first workshop is on Thursday the 21st from 11:00am to 12:30pm and covers “Academic Networking”. This session, which is open to all and particularly aimed at helping emerging scholars, will cover critical aspects of building a personal network that advances shared and individual goals. Topics include successful conferencing, identifying and pursuing funding, building a network during doctoral candidate and pre-tenure career stages, and establishing internal engagement within your institution.

Later on Thursday from 2:15 to 3:45pm will be “Me, You, Us: #MeToo, Biases, and Prejudices and All in Between”. This workshop is intended for all members of ARNOVA. The workshop covers biases, harassment, power dynamics, and barriers to inclusion. This is an informal session where attendees share personal experiences and learn multiple personal perspectives in order to reflect on cultural and societal challenges and discussing how to create safer spaces and be an effective ally or mentor.

Also on Thursday from 4:00 to 5:30pm is “The Academic Job Market”. This session, which targets emerging scholars but is open to everyone, will cover issues related to preparing for and navigating the academic job market. Topics include developing materials, participating in interviews, negotiating the offer, going back on the job market, considering alternative, careers and choosing the right job.

On Friday November 22nd from 8:45 to 10:15 am is “Research Tradecraft”. This session, which is open to all and particularly aimed at helping emerging scholars, will cover strategies for better organizing and conducting research. Topics include collaboration and co-authorship, maintaining focus, time management, revising and responding to criticism, balancing multiple projects in different stages of the process, and general writing tips.

Wrapping up the workshops on Friday from 2:15 to 3:45 pm is “Work-life Balance”. This session, which is open to all members of ARNOVA, will cover issues related to finding the professional balance between research, teaching, and service. The workshop’s discussions include navigating specific work/life challenges such as parenting, caregiving, or dual careers, balancing outside pursuits, and seeking to maintain physical, emotional, and mental health.

Each of the workshops has an exciting set of panelists and are intended be very participatory. We hope you can attend any or all that meet your needs and interests. Please feel free to reach out to either of us with any questions about the workshops.
