Dear ARNOVA Community,

It is with a mix of sadness and gratitude that the Board of Directors announces Shariq Siddiqui’s departure as Executive Director of ARNOVA, effective July 31, 2019. Since 2013, Shariq has played a critical role in the development and success of ARNOVA, and while we will miss him and his inspiring leadership, we wish him the best of luck in his new endeavor as Assistant Professor and Director of the Muslim Philanthropy Initiative at Indiana University’s Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. We want to thank Shariq for nearly six years of dedicated service, which involved many significant accomplishments, including:

  • Growing and diversifying our membership from fewer than 800 to nearly 1,500 members.
  • Growing and diversifying our North American annual conference attendance from fewer than 600 to over 900 attendees.
  • Increasing ARNOVA’s presence in Africa and Asia by working with local hosts to establish annual conferences and conduct emerging scholar workshops in both regions.
  • Helping support the creation of new programs, including our: Undergraduate Diversity Fellowship program, International Publication Workshops, Section Chairs Retreat, African NGO Leadership Transition Fellowships, Africa Emerging Scholars Fellowships, Emerging Scholars Professional Development programs, and Pre-Proposal Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships.
  • Increasing the number of participants in our North American annual conference’s Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship, Graduate Diversity Fellowship, and Conference Scholarship programs.
  • Partnering with the Ford Foundation to establish the Association for Research on Civil Society in Africa (AROCSA).
  • Working with partners at the Independent Sector, Urban Institute, Council on Foundations, and National Council of Nonprofits to further develop the annual Symposium on Nonprofits and Public Policy.

Over the next several months, we will be conducting a search to find a new Executive Director of ARNOVA. As our association approaches its 50th anniversary, we want to conduct a search process that will ensure that we find someone to lead us well into the next 50 years. The Board plans to focus its discussion at the May Retreat on ARNOVA’s future and the type of leadership we need to make the next 50 years possible. We also hope to continue to connect with our members and partners in the coming months to discuss what the future of ARNOVA can make possible in our next 50 years.

We hope to have a new Executive Director in place by our annual North American conference in November. It is our priority to find the best individual to lead, while still maintaining a stable and effective organization. We will share the job announcement when it is ready and ask for your help in identifying candidates who can help ARNOVA continue along our successful trajectory.

During the interim period, Holly Titus, ARNOVA’s Associate Director, will assist in the transition process. We are highly confident she will do an excellent job in sustaining and solidifying ARNOVA.

Again, we cannot thank Shariq enough for the dedication, passion, compassion, and visionary leadership he has provided ARNOVA over the past six years. He will be greatly missed as our Executive Director, but he will remain a valued colleague! We look forward to following the success of his career and are hopeful and excited for the next chapter of ARNOVA. If you have any questions or concerns during this transition process, please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly at aeikenberry@unomaha.edu.

Sincerely,

Angie Eikenberry

President, Board of Directors, ARNOVA
