Dear ARNOVA Members and Newsletter Subscribers,

ARNOVA has had a whirlwind summer and there is no slowing down this Autumn. I could take the entire newsletter to tell you about all that is happening but I will focus on a few highlights.

We are building on successful conferences in Asia and Africa as we put the final touches on our November conference. I hope to see you in Austin! It looks like we’ll have one of our largest conferences ever with new types of events and opportunities for networking. At the conference we will be celebrating many of our members’ achievements (see this newsletter for names of some of the award winners). We’ll be thanking our volunteers, program partners, and donors. Austin will be the place for sharing recent research findings, participating in professional development activities, considering new teaching methods and resources, and meeting old and new friends. This year, at the membership meeting during the conference, we‘ll share details on the status of the association and progress on our strategic plan.

In November, my term as President will end and we will have board member transitions. Thanks to all of you who voted in the elections. My deep gratitude goes to those who ran for board seats. The association will be in good hands as Angie Eikenberry takes the board president role and Shariq Siddiqui and his staff continue to strengthen our management. Serving on the board has been a transformative experience for me and I encourage any of you who are on the fence about running for a board seat or taking on other volunteer roles in ARNOVA to raise your hand. I certainly am happy that I did.

This summer I attended the ARNOVA-Africa/ AROCSA conference in Cairo, Egypt. Our host, the American University in Cairo, with the assistance of our sponsors, offered us a wonderful venue, fabulous food, and most important, excellent opportunities for learning and reflection. At the conference, our African ARNOVA Fellows, funded by the Ford Foundation, joined academic scholars, philanthropic leaders, seasoned practitioners and others to delve into issues and share research findings. I remain inspired by the passion and innovativeness expressed at the conference.

The ARNOVA-Asia conference also was a hotbed for new ideas and deepening understandings. Though I could not attend, I heard from many who did about the value of this conference. The University of Hong Kong was a superb host and helped bring awareness of ARNOVA to many in the city and throughout China. This regional conference is a great opportunity to meet new colleagues and have engaging and enlightening conversations.

ARNOVA achievements would not be possible without all the hard work and good ideas of our members, volunteers, staff, executive director and other stakeholders. We are a thriving community that relies on many different forms of support. As I look forward to Austin and our future regional conferences already in the works, I know that these events are only one of the benefits of being part of ARNOVA. Other examples are Nonprofit & Voluntary Sector Quarterly, webinars, section activities, and new initiatives we’ll be getting started in 2019. As always, there is more to come.

With warm regards,

Mary Tschirhart
