Glen Rock, NJ, (April 20, 2017) – Charity Navigator and the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA) are teaming up to drive further innovation in measuring the positive impact of our nation’s “third sector” -- the wonderful network of nonprofit organizations to which Americans will donate more than $370 billion in 2017.

Among the initiatives announced today is the The Dugan Research Award on Philanthropic Impact. Each yearly recipient will gain unfettered access to Charity Navigator’s extensive database and $10,000 to fund their work. There will be one winner each year for the next three years. Final research papers will be shared publically at ARNOVA’s annual conference and provide the basis for more advanced data and information science in the area of impact measurement and assessments.  For this partnership, Charity Navigator will finance the award, provide information and disciplinary support.  ARNOVA experts will be evaluating Dugan Award applications and selecting grant recipients.

“Pat and Marion Dugan founded Charity Navigator in 2002, as a center to support philanthropy with unbiased ratings and evaluations of our nation’s largest charities, “ said Michael Thatcher, President and CEO of Charity Navigator.  “The Dugans built a respected organization that provides guidance to charities and ensures donors that their individual philanthropy is effective. Our partnership with ARNOVA comes at an important time.  ARNOVA’s extraordinary conferences and publications are influencing philanthropy in far broader ways than could have been imagined when they started in 1971.”

“By collaborating on this award, Charity Navigator and ARNOVA continue their leadership in advancing understanding of what makes effective nonprofits.  The award will fund research that promises to provide important insights on uses of philanthropic resources," said Mary Tschirhart, President of ARNOVA.

Details regarding the Award and application process are available here.  Over the next three years, The Dugan Research Award on Philanthropic Impact, will provide an annual $10,000 award to support new work in the field of scalable approaches to capture, measure, and/or evaluate nonprofit programmatic impact.  Each year’s award recipient will produce a working paper of their findings to be published by Charity Navigator, and to presented at the annual ARNOVA Conference.  ARNOVA will establish a selection committee for this award comprised of ARNOVA members and this selection committee, not Charity Navigator, will have sole discretion for selecting award recipients.  Researchers, nonprofit professionals and ARNOVA members are welcome to apply for this year’s award starting April 25.  The application deadline is June 6, 2017.
