ARNOVA Board Statement Against Travel Ban

Much has happened over the last few weeks that is of great concern for our association and alarming to and condemned by some of our members. There is a range of opinions on recent actions taken by the Trump administration and different ideas about what this means for the nonprofit sector, the conduct of research, academic freedom, ARNOVA conference attendance, and other association matters. We respect this plurality of positions as it reflects the essence of democracy. It also gives us the opportunity to speak out in accordance with our association’s values of diversity and inclusion as well as our desire to support the professional lives of our members which includes the exchange of ideas domestically and internationally.

The ARNOVA Board acknowledges the diverse views and calls to action of our members. The Board has voted to take a stance against the recent Executive Order regarding entry into the United States for people from seven majority Muslim countries. Joining other scholarly societies, we oppose actions that limit interaction among scholars and inhibit the open exchange of scientific ideas. We also are pursuing methods to allow scholars with accepted proposals to participate in our November conference who are unable to enter into the United States or feel it is unsafe for them to do so (such as connecting them to their session through the internet).

In collaboration with our sister societies, we will be urging the U.S. President and other actors to take action to strengthen, not weaken, intellectual engagement and professional practice. We ask that our members continue to share with us their ideas on how to defend principles of academic scholarship and freedom of association. For those members who are personally and professionally affected by the Executive Order and other actions to restrict their participation in ARNOVA, we encourage you to contact the ARNOVA office to see how we may assist you. We understand that our members may wish to take individual actions such as signing the petition “Academics Against Immigration Executive Order.”

Let’s work together as a scholarly community to continue our good work under what many view as adverse conditions. The ARNOVA board will be monitoring new and ongoing challenges and working to defend the interests of our association and honor the values which we embrace.
