“Palgrave Handbook of Global Philanthropy”

Palgrave MacMillan, 2015

The “Palgrave Handbook of Global Philanthropy” by Pamala Wiepking and Femida Handy offers significant theoretical, empirical and practical contribution to the study of philanthropy in international perspective. The book presents and analyzes the geographic, geo-political, and culture differences in 26 countries. The chapters were written by fifty-five scholars from world-renowned universities whose main area of interest is the study of philanthropy and its role and mission in the modern state in general and the contribution to the civil society specifically. The book proposes conceptual framework for the study of philanthropy and contributes to the understanding of the contextual, county-specific factors that may facilitate or inhibit philanthropic giving. The authors analyze mechanisms that explain why philanthropy flourishes more in some countries than others. They distinguish factors that determine the success of philanthropy in a country, one of the most important being the organization of philanthropy. They find that in countries in which the need of philanthropy donations is highest, the philanthropic sector is often badly organized, and as a result, people don’t have faith in the sector and requests for donations are less successful. To address this situation the authors provide excellent materials concerning motives and advanced strategies to encourage giving and contributing to various goals.

This book makes an invaluable contribution to the field of philanthropy and promises to be the standard on philanthropy going forward. The merits and the unique added value of the book are in its high quality and scope, particularly international scope, written on philanthropy. The Palgrave Handbook of Global Philanthropy raises the bar for books on international philanthropy and makes an invaluable contribution in its empirical findings and extending the boundaries of the current state of theoretical knowledge in the field of philanthropy.
