Dear ARNOVA Members,

At the membership meeting during the 2013 ARNOVA Conference in Hartford, there was a request by the ARNOVA membership to the ARNOVA Board of Directors to include “International Outreach” among ARNOVA’s strategic priorities. The ARNOVA board and staff have taken the following actions since that time to respond to this member interest:

1. The board added language prioritizing international outreach to ARNOVA’s Strategic Plan, which can be viewed on the ARNOVA website.

2. The board formed an ARNOVA Board International Outreach Committee lead by Dr Mark Sidel and Dr Chao Guo. This committee met with key stakeholders within the ARNOVA membership and convened a discussion at the 2014 Annual Conference in Denver.

3. The board and staff facilitated and approved the formation of the Global Issues/Transnational Actors (GITA) Common Interest Group.

4. ARNOVA’s Executive Director visited China at the request of Fudan University in Shanghai. During his extended trip, which was paid for by external funders, he met with various universities and foundations in China; the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and Islamic Development Bank in Saudi Arabia; and the Pakistan Center on Philanthropy in Pakistan.

5. ARNOVA was approached by the Ford Foundation to help strengthen civil society in West Africa. This grant-funded project will result in convenings in Ghana, Nigeria, and Chicago. This project will also dramatically increase the number of ARNOVA members from Africa.

6. ARNOVA entered into an agreement with the NVSQ publisher, Sage, to host international publishing workshops through Sage’s sponsorship. In September 2015, ARNOVA hosted a publishing workshop in Accra, Ghana in partnership with the University of Ghana. We will also be hosting a second workshop in Beijing, China in partnership with Tsinghua University’s Institute on Philanthropy.

7. We are in the process of finalizing an agreement to announce an annual research award on global philanthropy similar to the current RGK-Presidents Award for research.

The board is committed to continuing to promote international outreach as part of its broader commitment to diversity.

Alan Abramson
ARNOVA President

Dear Alan, The body of the message is well crafted and communicates that we (ARNOVA) are committed to international outreach. The picture associated with the message is not quite as clear in presenting an appropriate message. I'm sure that it has meaning to some but perhaps not all (speaking personally). It does appear that individuals are walking through a portal/passage that is under development, but that is all I was able to glean if there was indeed a message to be received.
