Position Open: Editor-in-Chief

Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly

This is a request for applications for the position of Editor(s)-in-Chief (individual or group) of the Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly (NVSQ). NVSQ is the journal of the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA). ARNOVA is an interdisciplinary association of over 1,000 scholars and researchers from over 35 countries. It fosters and disseminates research through NVSQ, its annual fall research conference, and other publications and events. The ARNOVA office is located in Indianapolis, Indiana, and is an independent 501(c)(3), but has administrative support as an affiliated agency of Indiana University.

Now 44 years old and the first in its field, NVSQ is the flagship journal of the interdisciplinary field of research on nonprofit organizations, civil society, voluntarism, and philanthropy. NVSQ is published by Sage Publications under an agreement with ARNOVA.

Specific responsibilities of the Editor(s) include: providing overall leadership and direction for the content of the journal; ensuring that six issues of appropriate length appear on time; working productively with the journal’s publisher, Sage Publications; soliciting submissions and arranging peer reviews of manuscripts; and, responding to authors in a timely way. The Editor(s) is also responsible for convening and working with an Editorial Board of his/her choosing to help set the direction for the journal and establish major editorial policies. The term of this position is three years, with a renewal for an additional three years on mutual agreement of ARNOVA and the Editor(s).

NVSQ is currently receiving more than 500 submissions per year, and ARNOVA expects the number of submissions to continue to increase.  ARNOVA provides $33,500/year to support the work of the NVSQ Editor(s) in producing NVSQ

Competitive candidates for the Editor(s) position will be recognized scholars in the nonprofit research field with strong leadership, administrative, and interpersonal skills. The Editor(s) will be expected to maintain and strengthen the scholarly reputation of the journal and its impact. Candidates should be open to different approaches to research and be prepared to provide constructive feedback to authors.  The Editor(s) should also be sensitive to issues that arise because NVSQ is an increasingly international journal.  The future Editor(s) will be expected to demonstrate significant financial and departmental support from his/her own, host institution.

Through June 30, 2016, the new Editor(s) will work with the current co-editors, Femida Handy, University of Pennsylvania, Jeffrey Brudney, University of North Carolina - Wilmington, and Lucas Meijs, Erasmus University Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The new Editor(s) will assume full responsibility on July 1, 2016.

Interested candidates should submit the following materials:

1) an editorial plan, including a vision for the journal, a proposed editorial structure, and an indication of the level of support that will be committed by the Editor’s host institution(s) (no longer than 6 single-spaced pages)

2) the curriculum vitae of the Editor(s). Applications may be from individuals or small teams. For multiple editors, the curricula vitae can be combined into one PDF file or uploaded separately.

Applications should be submitted by September 15, 2015 for full consideration.  The search committee will ask for candidates on the short list to participate in a telephone or Skype interview, and finalists for the editor position will be interviewed in-person by the search committee on Thursday, November 19 or Friday, November 20 at the 2015 ARNOVA annual conference in Chicago, IL.  The ARNOVA Board will appoint the NVSQ editor at its November 21, 2015, post-conference meeting.

While not required, interested candidates are encouraged to contact ARNOVA’s executive director, Shariq Siddiqui (;  317-684-2120), to express their intentions to apply for the Editor(s) position.  Questions may also be directed to Shariq Siddiqui.  Applications should be submitted electronically to the NVSQ Editor(s) Search Committee below.  All applications will be treated confidentially.
