Dear Early Scholars,


We are doing our first round of elections in our staggered election cycle. Posts being elected are: Vice Chair, Treasurer, and 2 Member-At-Large posts. Below are our candidates and the election ballot:


Vice Chair Nominee


Kate Albrecht, MA
Running for: ESS Vice Chair
North Carolina State University

Kate Albrecht began the Ph.D. program in August 2015. She received her Masters of Public Administration from North Carolina State in 2016. Her research interests include 1) the dynamics of accountability in nonprofit-public partnerships and 2) the evolution of collaboratives that draw members from all sectors. Kate has authored and co-authored research that she has presented at the conferences of The Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA) and the International Society for Third Sector Research (ISTR). She is also a member of a multi-disciplinary research team led by Dr. Branda Nowell. Kate’s career goal is that her research will both advance theory-building and provide actionable best practices for public sector leaders. She serves as Internal Vice President of the Graduate Association of Public Administration and as a peer reviewer for the Nonprofit Management and Leadership Journal and the Journal of Public and Nonprofit Affairs. Kate is also an active member of both the Citizens’ Park Advisory Board in Hillsborough, NC and a local trail running group that fundraises for the preservation of public lands.

Treasurer Nominees


Seth J. Meyer
Running for: ESS Treasurer
Rutgers University

I am a third year PhD student at Rutgers University, Newark School of Public Affairs and Administration. For my dissertation, I am focusing on multisite nonprofit organizations and how they manage complex organizational characteristics that come with this type of organization. I have done research examining the use of social services. Before coming back to school, I held several positions as a social worker, including acting as the program manager for a national organization, with a focus on neurogenetics. My responsibilities included providing clinical and administrative supervision for social workers, including mentoring new social workers, liaising with chapters and staff across the country, as well as creating and managing programming budgets. Furthermore, in several positions while I was a social worker, my responsibilities included creating and overseeing budgets.


Maria V. Wathen, PhD
Running for: ESS Treasurer

Loyola University Chicago

Maria V. Wathen received a Joint PhD in Sociology and Social Work from the University of Michigan in August 2016. Since mid-August, she has been an Assistant Professor of Social Work at Loyola University Chicago. Her work explores civil society in Russia, focusing on grassroots volunteerism and nonprofit development in social services. In addition, she looks at issues of public and nonprofit program use by low-income households in the U.S. She has lived in other countries for almost twelve years of her adult life, with experience in both education and nonprofit social service delivery and development. She has training in clinical social work as well as experience in the business world.


Members-At-Large Nominees


Jamie Levine Daniel, PhD
Running for: ESS Member-At-Large
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis

Jamie Levine Daniel is an assistant professor at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. She earned her doctorate in public policy and management from Ohio State University’s John Glenn College of Public Affairs. Her research interests include nonprofit finance, nonprofit management, capacity, and organizational identity. Originally from Cleveland, OH, Jamie earned her BA in International Relations and Jewish Studies from American University, and her MBA from Ohio State. As a doctoral student, she served as a research fellow for the Mid-Ohio Foodbank, and has been a fellow at ARNOVA and the Academy of Management conferences. In addition, she was an ARNOVA Emerging Scholar in 2015. She holds a BA from American University and an MBA from Ohio State University. She spent five years working for BBYO Inc’s international office, and served as a JDC Jewish Service Corps Fellow in Izmir, Turkey before beginning her graduate studies.


Nathaniel Wright, PhD
Running for: ESS Member-At-Large
Texas Tech University

Dr. Nathaniel Wright received his B.A. and Masters of Public Administration from Binghamton University (2005, 2006); and Ph.D. in Public Administration from the University of Kansas (2014). Dr. Wright conducts research on the role that social advocacy nonprofits play in creating sustainable neighborhoods and also studies issues related to nonprofit organizational effectiveness and community and economic development. Dr. Wright’s work has appeared in Nonprofit Voluntary Sector Quarterly and is currently working on research related to measuring capacity in community-based nonprofits and assessing how arts and culture organizations contribute to community sustainability. He currently serves as an assistant professor in the department of political science at Texas Tech University, and teaches courses in nonprofit management and fund development. Wright is also ac active member of the lubbock nonprofit community, where he serves on the board of the Ballet Lubbock and as a trustee for the museum association of Texas Tech University.
