Gender Studies Under Attack from Uncivil Society

The new world has quickly arrived in both Hungary and the USA (as well as Russia in particular), and it is one dominated by male autocrats determined to keep women, LGBTQ persons, and civil society organizations in "their places"-- far from levers of societal power, privilege and respectability. An emerging academic response to these repressive developments involves the founding of new programs of teaching and research organized under the heading of "gender studies" which involves sharp feminist critique about power inequalities in our societies.

This talk may be seen as a report from the "Hungarian front", where the new master program in gender studies at ELTE University has struggled to establish itself in the face of opposition from governmental, government-organized non-governmental (GONGO) sector, and faith-based organizations. In this presentation, tales are told, how independent NGOs and women and minority advocacy organizations suffer from explicit attacks and implicit intimidation; and how neo-liberal financial restrictions are used to control and eliminate alternative voices.
