Early Scholars Section (ESS) is committed to inclusivity. A formal part of our commitment is the institution of an Early Scholars Section Diversity Plan (known from this point forward as "the Plan"). The Plan is required by the ARNOVA Committee on Diversity, an executive committee "charged by the Board of Directors to advocate, report, and serve as a resource to promote and sustain diversity in the structure and culture of ARNOVA and in all aspects of its governance, programming, and membership in order to (a) strengthen ARNOVA as a research association and (b) promote new research on questions of diversity and social inclusion, with due regard for relevant provisions of any Strategic Plan adopted by the Board currently in effect." The committee defines diversity as under-represented races, ethnic groups, disciplines, institutions, regions, nationalities, and theoretical and ideological perspectives, disabilities, age, income, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender. ESS is required to submit the Plan to the chair/co-chairs of the Committee on Diversity by May of each year. The Plan must address: (a) what will ESS do to ensure a diverse committee membership?; (b) what are the diversity issues relevant to ESS?; (c) how will ESS address these issues?; and (d) what has ESS done to address these issues?
Membership responses to the following survey helps the ESS Leadership Team draft the Plan. The survey asks: How do we serve the underserved? The survey consists of eight (8) voluntary demographic questions giving us a current ESS Membership diversity profile followed by three (3) exploratory questions. The survey should take approximately 10-12 minutes. Results of this survey as well as the Plan draft will be presented to Membership for review/comment. The Plan will then be presented to Membership for vote.
