CALL FOR PAPERS
2018 SEES Research Colloquium on Social Entrepreneurship
Hosts: The Social Enterprise/Entrepreneurship Section (SEES) of the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action
Theme: What We Know About Social Entrepreneurship
Location: University of San Diego located in San Diego, California
Date: Thursday May 31 – Friday June 1, 2018
In recent years, various institutional support organizations, legal structures, and public policies have been implemented to advance the burgeoning field of social entrepreneurship. As such, information is needed to inform the work of the variety of stakeholders (e.g. social entrepreneurs, academics, practitioners, accelerators, investors, funders, policy makers, etc.) seeking to understand and engage in the use of a business model as a tool for positive social and/or environmental change.
This colloquium is designed to support social enterprise research at all stages with small sessions that allow for generative and constructive discussion. On Thursday May 31st, attendees will attend a dinner featuring a San Diego-based social enterprise and will have the chance to connect with other scholars attending the conference. Friday June 1st, is dedicated to a full day of presentations, discussions, and possibly a keynote speaker during lunch.
The colloquium welcomes research in all areas that present innovative and rigorous experimental, quantitative, and qualitative methods studying social entrepreneurship. Special consideration will be given to topics and papers that:
- Assess the financial, social value, and/or environmental impact of entrepreneurship;
- Explore social enterprise ecosystems and their influence on social enterprise success;
- Highlight the influence of different governance systems on social enterprises;
- Distinguishes, compares, and/or contrasts new legal structures for social enterprises (e.g. Benefit Corporation,
L3C);
- Comparatively analyzes social entrepreneurship across different contexts (e.g. geographic, nonprofit, for profit,
government, etc.);
- Introduces, critiques, or highlights different techniques for teaching social entrepreneurship; or
- Reviews empirical research in the field
To contribute a manuscript for this colloquium please send a 300 to 500 word abstract to Dr. Rasheda L. Weaver at rlweaver@uvm.edu no later than February 15, 2018. Acceptances will be sent by March 1, 2018. Full manuscripts should be submitted by Friday May 25, 2018 to provide an opportunity for other scholars attending the conference to review work in an effort to provide substantial feedback during and after your presentation.
Please note: There is no cost to attend the colloquium or for the dinner and keynote lunch. In regards to accommodations, the SEES leadership team is working to obtain a conference rate with a local hotel. The conference itself will take place on the University of San Diego campus.
