2016 University of Maryland Do Good Institute– ARNOVA Award for Global Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership
Helmut K. Anheier
The inaugural 2016 University of Maryland Do Good Institute – ARNOVA Award for Global Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership is presented to Professor Helmut Anheier. His body of work has broken new ground in shaping the field. It has also enabled others to make contributions that have advanced knowledge of international philanthropy and civil society in comparative context.
The selection committee felt that his comprehensive contributions over the years merit this recognition. From his pioneering work in describing international civil society that was subsequently taken up by many others, to his comparative work on foundations, to his role in building journals and compendia of knowledge on the global dynamics of the nonprofit sector and volunteerism, the committee was impressed by the seminal role he has played in advancing the field.
Over the course of his distinguished academic career and more than 450 academic publications, he has conducted excellent research on nonprofit organizations and civil society, never straying too far from a global perspective. His research has helped improve the understanding of foundations in the U.S. and Europe, social innovation in a variety of areas, and governance in particular.
His contributions to building the scholarly infrastructure of global nonprofit and philanthropy studies include serving as Founding Editor (with Martin Knapp) of Voluntas - The International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Organisations, for which he also served as Editor-in-Chief for four years. He edited the International Encyclopedia of Civil Society (with Stefan Toepler), the Global Studies Encyclopedia (with Mark Juergensmayer), The Global Civil Society Yearbook (with Mary Kaldor and Marlies Glasius), The Springer Series in International Nonprofit Studies and Civil Society, and The Johns Hopkins Nonprofit Sector Series (with Lester M. Salamon).
Helmut Anheier is currently the president and Dean of the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin, and also holds a chair of sociology at Heidelberg University. He also serves as Academic Director of the Center for Social Investment at the University of Heidelberg.
The selection committee included Angela Bies (University of Maryland), Elizabeth Boris (Georgetown University), Dwight Burlingame (Indiana University). Kyle Caldwell (Grand Valley State University), Femida Handy (University of Pennsylvania), Amir Pasic (Indiana University), and Steven Rathgeb Smith (American Political Science Association). The selection committee, the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action, and the University of Maryland School of Public Policy’s Do Good Institute take great pleasure in awarding the inaugural University of Maryland-ARNOVA Award for Global Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership to Dr. Helmut K. Anheier.
