Statement of Reaffirmation of Our Values
by Outgoing and Incoming ARNOVA Board of Directors

Washington, D.C. (November 15, 2016):  We meet in Washington, D.C. this week for the ARNOVA Conference on the heels of an election that has sparked great debate and passion.

As scholars in a field that focuses most intently on private action for the public good, we reaffirm our support for an American democracy that allows for the free expression of diverse thought, opinions, and action that aim at strengthening our society.

We want to stress that ARNOVA is first and foremost a community. For more than 40 years, we have continued to build a scholarly organization that values diverse research that is empirically sound, methodologically rigorous, contributes to good practice, and is subject to critical discourse. We have done this with kindness and encouragement as we seek to continue to build our respective fields of research, and will continue to do so in the face of any perceived adversity.

This year’s conference theme is a timely one: Nonprofits, Philanthropy, and Government: Policy and Partnership in an Era of Change. We look forward to interacting with all conference participants and to enjoying their healthy and civil dialogue, and we remain—more than ever—committed to ideals of diversity and inclusion. It is reflected in the composition of our board, in our programming, and most importantly, throughout our global membership. As scholars committed to logical social inquiry, we know our work will take on added importance in the years to come.
