The Section is in the process of planning the 2016 Colloquium ‘He Who Pays the Piper Calls the Tune.’ This colloquium will explore the changing context in how human service needs are addressed and new funding approaches developed. The colloquium is inspired by newly developed philanthropic initiatives that support human services in ways that radically differ from more traditional forms of gifting. Colloquium presenters will discuss the implications that these new developments have for civil society as well as for individual organizations seeking to address social needs.
The Section is also sponsoring a panel on Theory Use and Theory Building in Nonprofit and Voluntary Studies. This panel is a response to the growth, diversification, specialization, as well as inter-disciplinarity – all recent trends observed in the field of nonprofit and voluntary studies. The panel will highlight perspectives from editors and co-editors of major field journals, and would be of interest to scholars of all career stages. Presenters will discuss the current role of theory in nonprofit sector research, and how nonprofit and voluntary studies scholars can ‘build’ and ‘use’ theory to improve the field’s research.
