ARNOVA’s Early Scholars Section hosted the first ARNOVA webinar on April 26, 2017. The webinar was titled How To Be A Productive Early Scholar: Summer Edition covering real life, pragmatic, advice to early and emerging scholars from Dr. Peter Frumkin and Dr. Chao Guo (University of Pennsylvania) on getting the most out of the summer months. We declare the webinar a success! The webinar registered early scholars from 7 countries, including Belgium, Egypt, Japan, Netherlands, Newfoundland, and the UK, with 58 early scholars in attendance. A follow-up survey (N=17) indicates the practical, pragmatic, real-world climate of the webinar spoke to attendees. Respondents reported undertaking greater planning of their summer schedules as well as schedules for the coming year following the webinar. It was also reported the webinar interface worked well for attendees. ESS welcomed the suggestions for improvement and suggestions included rethinking webinar times considering the global nature of our potential audiences and incorporating greater diversity when planning the webinar and presenters.
The session was taped and is available at www.ARNOVA.org for free ARNOVA membership viewing. ESS is planning a second webinar for September 2016.
Dinner in D.C.!
ARNOVA Section dinners are a great way to meet others of like mind and, perhaps, see if a Section meets an Early Scholar’s interests. Yet, simply showing up at a dinner can be a bit awkward, so ESS is making Early Scholar interaction with other Sections a bit easier. First, ESS will hold its membership meeting the day following the other Section Meetings encouraging Early Scholars to visit additional Sections that are of individual interest. The second act of encouragement is to make Early Scholars aware of Section dinner information.
Typically, all Section meetings are held on the Thursday afternoon of the conference with Section members enjoying dinner at a local restaurant that evening. These dinners are set up and hosted by each Section so arrangements vary. The most important bit of information to know is All Sections Welcome Early Scholars! A working document of ARNOVA Section Dinners and participation information for D.C. is available to Early Scholars on the ESS Blog at ARNOVA.org, or email firstname.lastname@example.org to obtain a copy. This document will continue to be updated as Section dinner information is received.
Go ahead, Early Scholars. Plan to sit in on a Section meeting and join a Section for dinner. Sections establish the community of ARNOVA and are an essential part of the membership and conference experience.
