The Corporation for National and Community Service, UPS Foundation and USA Freedom Corps partnered to conduct a national volunteer management capacity study and contracted the research services of the Urban Institute. The study examines the “demand-side” of the market for volunteerism and measures charitable organizations’ ability to recruit, manage, and retain volunteers.

America’s nonprofit sector has significantly outpaced the for-profit and government sectors in employment growth, reports a new study from Independent Sector.

Foundation Giving Declines in 2003
Three consecutive years of stock market losses and a sluggish and uneven economic recovery caught up with foundations in 2003. Giving by the nation’s nearly 65,000 grantmaking foundations declined an estimated 2.5 percent to $29,7 billion last year, down from just over $30 billion in 2002 and 2001, according to the Foundation Center’s new report, Foundation Growth and Giving Estimates.

Regulatory Reform of Australia’s Not-for-Profit Sector

A final research report titled “A Better Framework: Reforming Not-for-Profit Regulation” (Susan Woodward and Shelley Marshall) has been released and is available free online or can be ordered by visiting http://cclsr.law.unimelb.edu.au/activities/not-for-profit/. The report is the result of a three-year research project conducted at the Centre for Corporate Law and Securities Regulation at the University of Melbourne in collaboration with Philanthropy Australia Inc. (a primary body for non-government grant makers).
