Heeding the Call to Action: Public Policy Engagement for Children

Strengthening the capacity of child-focused advocacy coalitions is key to building a stronger voice for children. Too many calls to action are left unheeded, weakening the collective force of coalition members in their efforts to impact public policy on behalf of children. While a variety of factors likely influence the responsiveness of coalition members to calls to action, this master’s thesis examined a central factor in all behavior: the motives behind it. The study also examined the relationships among motives and advocacy activity and other factors, including members’ role in the coalition, job function, official duty, and organizational size.

Americans Give $241 Billion to Charity in 2003
American individuals, estates, foundations and corporations gave an estimated $240.72 billion to charitable causes in 2003, according to Giving USA 2004, a study released by Giving USA Foundation. This is an increase of 2.8 percent over a revised estimate of $234.09 billion for 2002. This is the highest rate of growth seen since 2000.

Indiana Nonprofits Ill-Prepared for Advocacy Roles
Indiana nonprofit organizations are affected by changes in community conditions and public policies, but many are ill-prepared to advocate for their positions on such changes, according to a report recently released by Indiana University’s Center on Philanthropy and School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

The Expanding Universe: New Directions in Nonprofit Capacity Building has been published by the Alliance for Nonprofit Management (www.allianceonline.org). The purpose of the research was to gain a better understanding of the leading edge of the capacity-building field—what types of innovations and new developments are emerging, and who are the players? Based on interviews and data from more than 100 sources, the report includes valuable insights for all capacity builders who are interested in stretching their thinking and delivering higher-impact work.

Author Susan Raymond, Ph.D., currently the managing director of research, evaluation, and strategic planning for Changing Our World, Inc., examines issues related to the connection between the future directions of philanthropy and nonprofit infrastructure and larger economic trends in the United States. The book consists of three- to four-page essays, each with several graphs and charts from well-known sources. It is organized into eight sections: Philanthropy and the Economy; Ethics and Accountability; Nonprofit Management Dilemmas; Philanthropy and Healthcare; Philanthropy and Education; U.S. Philanthropy in an International Context; Corporate Philanthropy; and Reflections on September 11, 2001.
