Heeding
the Call to Action: Public Policy Engagement for
Children
By: Kevin Hickey (kevinphickey@yahoo.com)
Strengthening the capacity of child-focused
advocacy coalitions is key to building a stronger voice
for
children. Too many calls to action are left unheeded,
weakening the collective force of coalition members
in their efforts to impact public policy on behalf
of children. While a variety of factors likely influence
the responsiveness of coalition members to calls to
action, this master’s thesis examined a central
factor in all behavior: the motives behind it. The
study also examined the relationships among motives
and advocacy activity and other factors, including
members’ role in the coalition, job function,
official duty, and organizational size.
