ARNOVA Call for Award Nominations for 2008
ARNOVA invites nominations for its 2008 awards, to be presented at the 37th Annual Conference on November 20-22, 2008, in Philadelphia, Pa.
Award for Distinguished Achievement and Leadership in Nonprofit and Voluntary Action Research (former Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award)
This award is given annually for significant contributions to the field through research and leadership. Nominees need not be members of ARNOVA. Please submit a letter of nomination (a maximum of two pages), a second letter of nomination (a maximum of two pages), and the nominee’s curriculum vitae. Either the nominator or the second nominator should come from a different institutional base rather than that of the nominee, and at least one should be a member of ARNOVA. Self-nominations will not be considered. The awardee is expected to receive the award in person. Cash prize: $1,000.

Award for Outstanding Book in Nonprofit and Voluntary Action Research*
This award is given for a single book, monograph, or edited book published in the three calendar years preceding the award (2005, 2006, and 2007). Books that contribute to the advancement of theory, conceptualization, research, or practice are eligible. Books developed as textbooks, journalistic accounts, and guides not based on systematic research are ineligible. Nominations from publishers are welcome. Please submit 5 copies of the book with a nomination letter. Cash prize: $1,000. *Please note that edited volumes are now eligible for the award.
Virginia Hodgkinson Book Award/Research Prize
The Virginia Hodgkinson Research Prize is given annually to the best book on philanthropy and the nonprofit sector that informs policy and practice. The prize is awarded by ARNOVA in cooperation with Independent Sector, and recognizes the pioneering role of Virginia Hodgkinson in the research on philanthropy and nonprofit organizations. Books must have been published within the three calendar years preceding the award. Books can be considered more than once. Entries must be published by a university press or commercial publishing house. Submissions from scholars representing any discipline are welcome. In addition, submissions are encouraged from young scholars, practitioners working in collaboration with university-based researchers, and scholars working on multi-disciplinary approaches. Prior prize recipients are ineligible for a five-year period after their award is received.
The Gabriel G. Rudney Memorial Award for an Outstanding Dissertation in Nonprofit and Voluntary Action Research
This award is given annually for a Ph.D. dissertation completed and/or defended in the three calendar years preceding the award (2005, 2006, and 2007). Dissertations that contribute to the advancement of theory, conceptualization, research, or practice in an area closely related to nonprofit organizations or voluntary action are eligible. Nominations are especially invited in the five issue areas where Gabe Rudney made significant research contributions during his lifetime: patterns of giving in the U.S., tax policy and charitable giving, tax policy and the nonprofit sector, the economic contribution of the nonprofit sector, and comparative international studies. The author’s advisor normally submits nominations. Nominations should explain the nature of the work and how well it meets criteria for excellence in its field, and should be accompanied by five copies of an extended abstract (approximately five pages). Nominees should be prepared to send a copy of the full dissertation upon request. Cash prize: $1,000.
