Special Conference Events
Opening Keynote Plenary & Welcome Reception (Thursday Evening): Lynn Huntley, President of the Southern Education Foundation, will give the opening address on our Conference theme, asking us to think more deeply about the obligations of philanthropic institutions to the larger society. Ms Huntley currently leads one of the most significant nonprofits in the U.S. addressing issues of justice and equity in our education system(s). She was previously a Program Officer with the Ford Foundation, and as an Asst. US Attorney General for Civil Rights.
Following her address there will be a welcome reception for all, which will include an “Author’s Corner” where you can see and here about the latest books in our field authored by ARNOVA members.
Second Plenary Session & Reception (Friday Evening): Michael Useem is a Professor of Management at the Wharton School at University of. Pennsylvania, and a respected scholar of leadership, decision making, and change management. He will speak about leadership development and succession issues based on recent extensive research on these questions. He will look particularly at those now facing nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations.
His talk will be followed by a special reception for Dr. Useem and ARNOVA members sponsored by the School of Social Policy & Practice in honor of their 100th anniversary.
Third Plenary Session – at the Closing Luncheon (Saturday):Michael Edwards serves as Director of the Governance and Civil Society Program at the Ford Foundation. Prior to that he was the Senior Civil Society Specialist at the World Bank, and before that spent 15 years as a manager in international relief and development NGO’s. He has written extensively about NGOs, civil society and international cooperation.
His most recent book, Just Another Emperor?: The Myths and realities of Philanthrocapitalism, challenges many current assumptions about the roles and values of NGO’s. He will address our Conference theme from this perspective that represents an alternative view of some recent developments in the Sector.
Membership Meeting (Friday Morning): ARNOVA invites the input of all members to its direction and governance. The Board is working on a new plan for ARNOVA, and sees this meeting as a vital opportunity to share ideas with members and hear their ideas and concerns. Breakfast will be offered, and all members are strongly encouraged to attend.
